What is Zakat?

Zakat is a form of charity in Islam that helps support people in need. If a Muslim owns wealth above a minimum threshold (called nisab) for one full lunar year, they are required to give 2.5% of that eligible wealth as zakat.

Zakat is paid on certain types of wealth, such as cash, savings, gold, silver, investments, and business assets, but not on everyday personal items.

Nisab: The minimum amount of wealth required before Zakat becomes obligatory, based on the value of gold or silver.

Cash-like / Short-Term Investments

Investments you can convert to cash (stocks, ETFs, crypto, mutual funds, gold ETFs). Enter the amount you could sell these for today. Estimate if needed.

Long-Term Shares / ETFs / Mutual Funds

If you are holding ETFs or shares as a long-term investment, then Zakat is due on your proportionate ownership of the Zakatable assets of the companies in which you have invested.

Normally this is done by finding out which stocks you own, how many shares you own, and then using the company balance sheets to work out roughly what the Zakatable assets are in each firm.

If it is difficult for you to determine this, simply take 25% or 30% of the current market value of your portfolio as an estimate proxy for the Zakatable assets of the underlying companies.

For long-term investments, a default adjustment of 30% is used in the calculation. This is an estimate, and users can adjust it if needed.
